Volunteer Services places volunteers and interns in more than 20 different program areas. Last year, there were over 70 volunteers and interns . Internships are offered in more than ten different program areas.
Time commitment: this varies, but typically a minimum commitment of 9 months, working 3-10 hours per month. Internships are usually designed for Masters level students and last 1-2 academic terms, with hours set by the university.
Examples of what undergraduates have done in years past:
- Collecting data regarding tobacco products and sugar sweetened beverages in retail stores
- Assist with syringe exchange activities
- Conducting surveys at the Farmer’s Market
- Mentoring LGBTQ teens
- Mentoring teens at high risk for pregnancy
- Tobacco use
- Breastfeeding friendly facilities
Orientation: volunteer orientation is scheduled with Kyla Pearlman after a volunteer is selected for a specific position. The time from application to starting work can take as long as 4-6 weeks, mostly dependent on how closely schedules mesh.
Shadowing opportunities: this seems not to be regular fare, but Kyla is quite flexible and letting her know your wishes may earn you a limited shadowing position.
