Avista Adventist Hospital has about 170 volunteers at a given time, about 300 per year. It is approximately 10 miles from Boulder. With this short distance may come an advantage: there may be less competition in your area of interest.
Requirements: students spend a semester and/or the summer. So, January to May, September to December, or a summer.
A link will be sent with a list of volunteer opportunities and a description of the tasks associated with it. If you choose an option, there is an on line interview, followed by an on line orientation.
After the orientation, you will sign a form that states you are up to date on immunizations and have had flu shot if it’s flu season. A blood test will be drawn to assess your TB status.
Time from initial application to working is relatively quick, and most dependent on the prospective volunteer completing the application process in a timely way.
Shadowing: There is no formal shadowing program. However, if you arrange to shadow a physician, Sherri will sign off on the paperwork.

I have enjoyed my time working with the Emergency Department staff immensely. My time at Avista has been a wonderful learning opportunity. I would absolutely recommend volunteering in the Emergency Department to future students seeking careers in medicine. The friendly atmosphere and widely varied clinical exposure have been invaluable to me as I have sought a career in medicine.
